Preparing for KET (A2)

Are you taking KET in 2020?  If so, click here to see what you'll need to do in the exam.  Remember that the first paper is reading and writing.  It has seven parts and you have 60 minutes to finish everything.  In part one, you have to read six short texts and choose the sentence with the same meaning from the three choices below.  You can do more practice herehere and here.

In the second part, you read three texts on the same topic and then match the questions to the correct text.  Before you look at the questions, make sure you read the texts and think about the similarities and differences between the three people.

In part three, you read one long text and answer 5 questions.   Part four also has one text but this time you need to choose the correct word to complete the gaps.  Remember to read very carefully before and after each gap!   Part five is very similar.  However, there's no help so you have to think of the word by yourself

Hi Airam,
We're _____________ a lovely time on holiday.  The weather has _________ very good and I love the food.  We're going to visit my aunt and uncle tomorrow.  _________ live in a small village near Barcelona.

Look at the first gap.  We're ___________ a lovely time.  We're tells you the verb must end in +ing but what verb usually goes before a good/nice/lovely/great time?  In the second gap, you can see the verb has and the writer is talking about the weather until now.  We've practised this kind of grammar in class but have you forgotten it?  Now look at the third gap.  The writer's aunt and uncle are two people and you can see the verb live after the gap, so what word should you write?  Like part four, remember it's always very important to look before AND after the gap before you write anything.

The final two parts are writing tasks.  In part six, you have to write a short email using 25 words or more.  You always need to write about three things.  For example, your friend Juan is coming to visit your town.  Tell him where he can stay, the best places to go sightseeing and what kind of food he can eat.

Hi Juan,
It's great to hear you're coming to San Sebastian de la Gomera.  I'm sure you'll love it here.  Don't worry about finding a hotel because you can stay at my house.  We'll go to my favourite restaurant to eat some pizza or perhaps some traditional food such as almogrote.  If you want to go sightseeing, we can go to the beach or a museum.

See you soon,
Enara

You can see an example of the writing task here.

Finally, in part seven you need to write a story about three pictures using more than 35 words.  When you write your story, remember to think carefully about the verbs you're going to use.  Is your story about the past, the present or the future?  If it's the past, make sure all your verbs are in the past simple (went, did, said, took) or the past continuous (was going, was doing, was taking).  Don't forget to use words to organise your story too:

  •  First of all, ....
  •  However, ..... /  When she got to the platform, there was.....
  • Suddenly / Luckily, ….
  • After that / Next / Then / Afterwards
  • And so in the end / Finally / Eventually

The second paper is listening. There are five parts and 25 questions.  You'll hear all the recordings two times.  After you've finished listening, you'll have more time to write the information on the answer sheet. In part one, you hear five recordings and have to choose the best answer from three pictures.  Look here for more practice.  In the second part, you listen to one person talking and write down five pieces of information.  In  part three, you listen to a conversation and answer five questions.   You can practise part three here too.  In part four of the listening, you hear five short recordings and answer one question about each of them. Finally, you hear a conversation and complete choose the right answers from a list.  When you've finished the first practice activity, try this as well.

The final paper is speaking. There are two parts.  In the first part, the examiner will ask you some questions about your family, home, school and hobbies. Remember to always try and make your answers longer using but, and, so & because.

I like football but I don't play it very often because I usually play computer games.

To make your answers even better, remember to use different expressions for likes and dislikes and to give your opinion:

I'm really into football but I don't play it very often because I usually play computer games.  I'm mad keen on Fortnite.  I reckon it's the best game I've ever played.

Always try to answer with two or three sentences.  Remember you can use That's why instead of so:

I'm into football.  That's why I play it every day with my friends.

And you can use though instead of but:

I'm a huge fan of football. I don't play it so much, though.

In the second part, you have to talk about a situation with your partner.  You will be given 5 pictures and you have to talk together and explain if you like or dislike them.  You can watch a video about this here.

Remember that you'll need to:

1.  Say what you can see in the pictures.  This picture shows a ….. / In this picture I can see...
Two boys are + ing

2.  Say if you like or dislike the things you see   I'm (really) into.... / I'm a (big/huge) fan of... / I'm mad keen on..... / I can't stand..... /  I like …….very much

3.  Give reasons:  Because / As / So / That's why

3.  Ask your partner questions  What / How about you?  / What do you think? / Do you agree? / Am I right? / ................, right? / You?

If you want to make your answers better, you can agree and disagree:  Same here / I know what you mean / Do you really think so? / Perhaps, but I'm more into....

You can also use more difficult grammar:  I've read lots of books /   I've never played volleyball / If I could choose just one, it'd be...…. / Playing football is much better than...…. /  Reading books is easily the best thing to do / I hardly ever play football.

After you've finished, the examiner will ask you questions about the same topic. You can watch a speaking video here to see the whole exam.

If you want to see the vocabulary that you should know, you can look at the full list here.  For example, do you know what a towel is? Do you ever eat yoghurt?  What can you buy at a chemist's? You can play some games to check your vocabulary here and here
